ELLIÐAÁR BRIDGES

Elliðaár Bridges, Reykjavík

The goal is a diverse interplay between man-made paths, bridges, and the landscape to create a desirable environment and thus encourage increased hiking and cycling. The river here is the natural center of gravity that sets the tone. The bridge has soft lines; sloping slopes and rounded bends create a safe and comfortable environment for traffic. The bridges are clearly defined in the space, clearly visible and have an obvious beginning, middle and end. In the opinion of the authors of the proposal, it is essential that the bridges do not disrupt the impression of the landscape, but offer new opportunities for experience and discovery. The form is the result of a combination of sculptural design and progressive load-bearing and cost-effective thinking. The two bridges vary in length. As a result, the experience of them will be like that of a little brother and big brother; the expression is similar but different enough to constantly invent something new for the eyes of road users.
