FOSSVOGUR BRIDGE
Fossvogur Bridge, Reykjavík
The location of the new Fossvogsbrú bridge is very special. The immediate surroundings of the bridge are shaped by a natural shoreline and the beauty of Fossvogur. In the distance Hallgrímskirkja and Reykjavík University form a counterbalance of the nature of the area around the bridge and the city center. The new Fossvogur bridge must be connected to its surroundings, dignified and in balance with the nature of the area. The natural environment is the reason for our decision to design from the classic shapes of the arch bridge, where soft lines and the basic advantages of a bow naturally tend to to be in balance with the environment. We propose to cross Fossvogur with three arches, with an increased length in the middle. The design is reminiscent of traditional Icelandic arch bridges such as the prestigious Hvítárbrú in Borgarfjörður. With the unusual combination of soft arches and the ideology behind the two-decks, the bridge will make the new Fossvogsbrú a catchy landmark in the vicinity of Reykjavík and Kópavogur. Fossvogur is crossed in three large steps. Some of the functions of the arcs are interconnected, which makes the center of the bridge open and inviting. The height of the bridge is determined by the nearby airport.
